A Disability Justice Strategy for the ACT

August 09, 2019

Today the ACT Labor Government launched the Disability Justice Strategy 2019-2029, a ten-year plan that aims to ensure people with disability in the ACT have equal access to justice and support for their right to equality before the law.
This was a big day for many people. It follows two years of intensive consultation with people with disability, their families, carers and the many agencies and organisations across the wider justice system. Over these two years, I heard the stories of many people with disability who have faced barriers and inequality in the justice system. Their ideas and experiences are the reason this strategy is so important, for me, for the Government and for the whole Canberra community.
The Strategy was an election commitment in 2016, made in recognition of the fact that people with disability experience a greater need for legal support than many other people in our society and are unacceptably over-represented in our justice system. The introduction of this strategy will ensure people with disability understand their rights and, more importantly, that these rights are respected.
The Disability Justice Strategy is an example of what progressive Labor Governments can achieve. We will continue to fight for all Canberrans to ensure that every person in this city has an equal opportunity to live life to their full and to be part of our community.
I really hope you take the opportunity to read through the Disability Justice Strategy. In particular, the many real stories that highlight why the justice system needs to change.
The Disability Justice Strategy is an achievement all ACT Labor members can be proud of. Fighting injustice is in our DNA as a party and I hope you join me in promoting this work to your families and friends.
